Last Week's Program

Ross Taylor was our chair and Vice President Graeme Fleet welcomed all including Rotaractor Sam and our guest speaker Angela Lord and our Rotary Exchange student Leo from Taiwan in Year 10 at Geelong College and currently staying with Sue Beretta and family.

Angela spoke about Urban Upcycle urbanupcycle.com.au based at Shop 7, 147 Marshalltown Road, Grovedale.
Angela is a PE teacher and works with her sister and mother who are "crafty people" in the business of collecting other people's waste and sell it on as craft supplies and keeping it out of (or at least postponing its ultimate journey to) landfill - cardboard tubes, material, CDs, plastic offcuts and packaging, tubing, polystyrene, corks etc.
Sadly, many items are the product of a change of fad or fashion...there is much waste from a whim.
Industry benefits by saving waste disposal costs and by contributing to the imaginative play of children, giving beleaguered parents a quiet hour and demonstrating to children the value of recycling...and we hope for the sake of The Planet that their generation succeeds.
Our members were quick to demonstrate their skills with this material....Tony Alsop went straight to space and Graeme Fleet's Bird of Paradise was something to behold.
If we all use less, if we all think hard before we spend our money and if we re-use, we will have a better place in which to live.

Its Show Time...soon
The Geelong Show is 19 to 22 October.
We will trial the use of Whoozin, with each Rotarian indication their availability.
Non Rotarian helpers will be contacted separately.

Our Glorious Leader's Glorious Leadership Team
President Bryan announced the formation of a “Leadership Team” to assist the current president with planning for the next President’s year. The initial members are President Bryan, Past Presidents  David S, Tony A, Ross and Jenny, and if there are others who wish to assist to speak to Bryan.

Membership Committee Report - from David Sykes

The "Volunteering evening on 22 August with Gail Rodgers as the guest speaker was a great success with more than 20 invited guests.

Thanks go to the seven Rotarians who hosted the guests ,and please maintain contact with the view of engaging them in Rotary, either as a volunteer, or as a member.

We have a new event for membership coming up on 19 September 2017 with PDG Jessie Harman.

A number of Rotarian had potential guests who were not able to attend on the 22 August.

This is another event focussing on the changing nature of volunteering and how Rotary is responding to these changes.

As well Jessie will encourage us to “go out there and engage” with your friends, family and associates.

Again this is a sponsored event for invited guests with the club paying the meal costs.

So challenge yourself and ask your associates to come to a free meal!

Jessie has recently MC’d the “Regional Rotary Membership Conference held in Adelaide 26 & 27 August.

The two day program was well attended and below are listed some of the topics:

  • Global Membership Trends - Where are we now and where are we headed                       Jessie Harman
  • The Future of Rotary - The importance of attracting younger members and strategies on how to do just that.  Mitty Chang
  • Rejuvenation and Rebuild of the Rotary Club of Adelaide              Darcy Walsh

These are only some of the topics, and from the program all the topic are very relevant to us.

Defying the Drift - 25 to 27 September 2017
Stan Deans urges us to become involved in District 9780’s program, Defying the Drift, aimed at raising the awareness of young people to opportunities to pursue careers in agriculture. The residential program will be held at Marcus Oldham College from 25 to 27 September 2017. Stan has already found two participants and urged others to look for likely young people who would benefit from the program.

Legacy Badge Sales
Many thanks to David Beretta and a dedicated group of Club members who over 3 days sold more than $1,800.00 in Legacy badges.

What should we say on the front of the Rotary Down Under magazines that we distributed?
We need something catchy to catch the eye of those who pick up the Rotary Down Under magazines which Stan distributes around the waiting rooms of Geelong.

Rotary Foundation Report
Ross as TRF chair advised that we will have a Soup Saver Night at the East Geelong Uniting Church to raise funds for TRF and we will have a first class guest speaker who speaks of his own polio experience.
It is on 7 November and we aim to raise $1,000.00.
Instead of meeting at The Eastern Hub, will be meeting at the East Geelong Uniting Church and for $20.00 will be enjoying a choice of three home-made soups, crusty bread and bread rolls, slices and seconds and thirds if required.  All money raised will be sent to The Rotary Foundation, to be put towards the End Polio Now program.  John Birrell is kindly allowing us to use the church facilities for free.

The guest speaker for the night is a well-known radio and television presenter, Gary Newton.  When Gary was not yet one, he contracted polio (the paralysis type) and has lived with this challenge all his life.  His is an inspiring story and he is a wonderful advocate for positive thinking as well as an outstanding worker in the fight against polio.  He is a director of Polio Australia and hopes to travel to India in February next year to help administer oral vaccine to children in last resort locations.
With Partners, Friends of Rotary & Rotaractors, we are hoping to attract around 50 people to this meeting.

October is the month to support Australian Rotary Health and we will take our hats off to mental health. More details to follow.
