Last Week's Program

Past President Ross Taylor welcomed all (and there were lots) to our special night at the East Geelong Uniting Church in aid of The Rotary Foundation.
It was great to see Albie and Bettine.

This was our Soup Saver Night held to welcome in Foundation Month as well as to raise money for TRF signature program, End Polio Now.

The evening raised $1,000 through the entry donation of $20 per head with proceeds going to Polio Plus as all the food was donated.

We enjoyed excellent home made soup, crusty bread and rolls and delicious desserts and cake.

Our guest speaker, Gary Newton, told us of his life with polio and what that has meant for him.

We heard the story of the polio virus and the difficulties and achievements which have come through Gary's experience.
Gary is particularly troubled by the current anti-vaccine lobby.
Post-polio syndrome is the new challenge coupled with aging which the sufferers of the virus in the late 1940's and early 1950's now confront.
In January next year, Gary and 2 friends will travel to India to increase awareness of the disease and to honour the carers and the parents of child sufferers.
Gary encouraged us all to support The Ride the Bellarine project in 2018.
A resurgence of polio amongst us is a tragedy which we can avoid by vigilance and the promotion of immunization in our own community and throughout the world.
We can learn more and support the polio eradication program by buying tickets to the movie premier of "Breathe".
Polio eradication is one part of the equation as the community must also learn to support the estimated 400,000 polio survivors who live amongst us.

Announcements, News and Help Required

Good News on the Numbers Front
President Bryan reported on his meeting with The Hub regarding our catering.
The deadline for numbers to The Hub is now Monday at 11.00 am and negotiations are continuing on the number of meals in our buffer.
Members will be asked to give their RSVPs via Whoozin by 6.00 pm Friday
We are as ever so grateful to Sue Beretta for managing the Whoozin system and keeping our catering numbers as accurate as possible so we don't waste Club funds.

Thanks to our Rotaractors
John Birrell presented our Rotaract Club of Barwon with $1,000.00 to acknowledge the support we received from the Rotaractors at the Geelong Show.

Happy Birthdays!
Happy birthday to Allannah and Leo and we celebrated with 2 beautiful cakes and we remembered our great friend and greatly missed most valued member George James on what would have been his birthday also.

Our Annual General Meeting - Club Roles and Committees
David Sykes reminded us that the 21 November is our AGM and members are encouraged to express an interest in taking a club position in the 2018-2019 Rotary year.
David is seeking our input into the 2018/19 year, our preferences and assistance on committees and club roles.

The attached  and thanks to those who completed and returned on the night.

Please complete and return to David this Tuesday 14th the survey sheet which was handed out last week

The Director Roles are elected at the AGM, but other positions are placed prior to the first ordinary meeting in the new 2018/19 year.

Please consider accepting roles, particularly as Directors or Chairs, as an opportunity to assist Rotary, as well as personal fulfilment and development. Training and mentoring will be available to assist those who take up the challenge.
