Last Week's Program

Jonathan Hepner was our chair and Past President Janine welcomed all including Tony's guests Peter and Yannick Cook and our Rotary Exchange student Leo from Taiwan who is in Year 10 at Geelong College and currently staying with Sue Beretta and family.

Ross reported on Elizabeth's health and we are pleased to hear that she is on the mend.

Leo with our Rotary Exchange students is  fundraising and is selling raffle tickets with a trip to Tasmania as the prize. The draw will be at District Conference.
Leo is keen to get around with other Rotarians so contact Sue Beretta if you would like to have Leo.

December 3 will be a Bunnings Waurn Ponds sausage sizzle fund raiser. More details to follow.

Sam and Sue attended Part 1 of the Rotary Institute and part of the homework is a survey of members which will coming soon.

David Sykes on membership advised that two occasions for sponsored meetings coming up will be great for guests.

Tony Alsop has the opportunity for the Club to attend a daytime visit to Deakin and will investigate further.

Warren presented an International Service Committee report

The first meeting of the International Committee was held on Tuesday 1st August.

The focus of the meeting was on the following:

·       Individual Objectives for 2017 (not programs)
·       Review of Member Suggested Programs
·       Decision on adoption of any of those programs
·       Committee member ideas & commitments

The committee has a budget of $7,000.00 from the Board.  It was decided that there should be a focus on obtaining financial support for projects from other sources this year, so that we can meet on-going commitments and fund new programs.

The members of the committee identified three key areas (not programs) that they would like to focus on this year:

·       Hands-on Projects
·       Use community skills, knowledge and finance to support the projects
·       Identify additional sources of funding projects

It is the committee’s intention to support the following programs (based on member generated ideas):

·       Purchase Shelter Boxes
·       Support a Rotary Peace Scholar
·       Fight Malaria

Two member generated ideas will be supported, and may not require funding this year.

·       The Cambodian Water project will be supported (funding already in hand)
·       DIK – this will depend on DIK finding a new home as the property at Osborne House has been closed by the City of Greater Geelong due to health issues

Three projects are being investigated by committee members.  These are:

·       International Dinner (Taiwan or France theme) – Jenny Acopian
·       International Business Seminar – Stan Deans
·       MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) for local schools – Warren Norton
·       Malaria Fundraising through schools – Sue Dunlop

Some of the work on investigating the feasibility of these potential projects has already commenced.  However, all three of the members listed above will be on leave from the club over the next few months.  This is likely to slow the work down.

We have recently been advised that 3 of the Shelter Boxes purchased by the club in the past twelve months have been used. All were sent to Cameroon to house families fleeing the conflict there.

In the last Rotary year, a Groups 9 & 10 International Committee was established.  I have attended the first meeting for this Rotary year.  We are considering supporting a water project in Tanzania brought to the committee by RC Kardinia.

A second project from that group will take place here in Geelong on Wednesday 25th October.  That is the night following our ‘night off’ for working at the Show.  I would urge all members to consider supporting this event.  It is a dinner and will be held here at the Hub.  There are flyers on your tables.

The following article is a message from the Rotarian Action Group for Peace.

A Message from our Chair for International Peace Day
 Grow With What You Know

In honor of International Peace Day, take a few minutes to look a little deeper at life through the peacebuilder lens. Picture yourself as a consummate peacebuilder.

Envision what you will do to build more peace in your home, your school or workplace, and your community. How will you respond to daily frictions, conflicts, and other challenges that disrupt peace? How will you be more proactive in building peace in all those places?
What about finding more peace in your own life?
If you stop and think about it, you already know some things you can do to be a better peacebuilder. Commit to doing them! Take action! Fully live your piece of peace!
You may not be responsible for world peace,
but you are responsible for your piece/peace™.
(i.e. your piece of world peace and your own inner peace.)

Then step up your game. Join us at the Rotarian Action Group For Peace.
Encourage others to do the same. Together we’ll build the world we all yearn to see!
“Every Rotarian a Peacebuilder”

Defying the Drift - 25 to 27 September 2017
Stan Deans urges us to become involved in District 9780’s program, Defying the Drift, aimed at raising the awareness of young people to opportunities to pursue careers in agriculture. The residential program will be held at Marcus Oldham College from 25 to 27 September 2017. Stan has already found two participants and urged others to look for likely young people who would benefit from the program.

Our meeting - 26 September 2017 - Juries Commissioner - Jury Service - Guest speaker -Paul Dore

Paul is responsible for the efficient and effective management of Victoria’s jury system. To that end, he leads a team of dedicated staff across the State to ensure a sufficient number of Victorian citizens, broadly representative of the community, are available to serve as jurors on Supreme Court and County Court criminal and civil trials.

Paul has held this role since March 2012

What should we say on the front of the Rotary Down Under magazines that we distributed?
We need something catchy to catch the eye of those who pick up the Rotary Down Under magazines which Stan distributes around the waiting rooms of Geelong.

Rotary Foundation - Soup Saver Night - 7 November at East Geelong Uniting Church
We will have a Soup Saver Night at the East Geelong Uniting Church to raise funds for TRF and we will have a first class guest speaker who speaks of his own polio experience.
It is on 7 November and we aim to raise $1,000.00.
Instead of meeting at The Eastern Hub, will be meeting at the East Geelong Uniting Church and for $20.00 will be enjoying a choice of three home-made soups, crusty bread and bread rolls, slices and seconds and thirds if required.  All money raised will be sent to The Rotary Foundation, to be put towards the End Polio Now program.  John Birrell is kindly allowing us to use the church facilities for free.

The guest speaker for the night is a well-known radio and television presenter, Gary Newton.  When Gary was not yet one, he contracted polio (the paralysis type) and has lived with this challenge all his life.  His is an inspiring story and he is a wonderful advocate for positive thinking as well as an outstanding worker in the fight against polio.  He is a director of Polio Australia and hopes to travel to India in February next year to help administer oral vaccine to children in last resort locations.
With Partners, Friends of Rotary & Rotaractors, we are hoping to attract around 50 people to this meeting.

October is the month to support Australian Rotary Health and we will take our hats off to mental health. More details to follow.
