Our Glorious Leader's Glorious Leadership Team
President Bryan announced the formation of a “Leadership Team” to assist the current president with planning for the next President’s year. The initial members are President Bryan, Past Presidents David S, Tony A, Ross and Jenny, and if there are others who wish to assist to speak to Bryan.
Eddification - Rotary celebrates Polio Day on Tuesday 24th.
Clubs around the world will be raising funds for that project by holding a Soup Saver Day and Foundation Chairman Ross has already given notice of our involvement. However that date falls within our involvement with the Geelong Show and we are holding our Soup Saver on 7th November.
This would be another great meeting to invite family and friends to join us and be updated on how Rotary is ridding the world of an insidious disease which attacks the youngest and most vulnerable inhabitants of our world and see the proceeds of their soup and roll meal go towards Rotary’s Polio Program.
Progress figures for 2017 are 5 cases in Afghanistan (7 in 2016) and 3 in Pakistan (20 in 2016) Statistics for Pakistan are the more notable because they have fallen from 306 in 2104 through 54 in 2015.
Now here’s a question that could be used in a trivia quiz:
When was Polio last in Europe? (If you guessed 2002, the year the region was certified polio-free, you’re wrong.)
The last time polio affected a child in Europe was 2015. Two Ukrainian children were diagnosed with paralytic polio and it is likely many more were infected but didn’t show the symptoms.
Ukraine had vaccinated only 50% of its children and low immunisation rates are a recipe for an outbreak. In this case, a rare mutation in the weakened strain used in the oral polio vaccine was able to spread because so many children had not been vaccinated. To stop it progressing, the country needed to administer 6 million vaccines through an emergency program.
Next week we will see how identified cases are just the tip of the iceberg for only one in every 200 cases of the illness results in paralysis. So several hundred are carrying the disease and may not show it. And145 laboratories set up around the world are monitoring the disease and playing an essential role in its eradication.

What should we say on the front of the Rotary Down Under magazines that we distributed?
We need something catchy to catch the eye of those who pick up the Rotary Down Under magazines which Stan distributes around the waiting rooms of Geelong.
Rotary Foundation - Soup Saver Night - 7 November at East Geelong Uniting Church
We will have a Soup Saver Night at the East Geelong Uniting Church to raise funds for TRF and we will have a first class guest speaker who speaks of his own polio experience.
It is on 7 November and we aim to raise $1,000.00.
Instead of meeting at The Eastern Hub, will be meeting at the East Geelong Uniting Church and for $20.00 will be enjoying a choice of three home-made soups, crusty bread and bread rolls, slices and seconds and thirds if required. All money raised will be sent to The Rotary Foundation, to be put towards the End Polio Now program. John Birrell is kindly allowing us to use the church facilities for free.
The guest speaker for the night is a well-known radio and television presenter, Gary Newton. When Gary was not yet one, he contracted polio (the paralysis type) and has lived with this challenge all his life. His is an inspiring story and he is a wonderful advocate for positive thinking as well as an outstanding worker in the fight against polio. He is a director of Polio Australia and hopes to travel to India in February next year to help administer oral vaccine to children in last resort locations.
With Partners, Friends of Rotary & Rotaractors, we are hoping to attract around 50 people to this meeting.

Cambodian Adventure with Purpose
Join Rotarians in a travel adventure to Cambodia in the first two weeks of February 2018, to experience first hand the culture and friendship of Cambodians and see the results of our D9780 Project in Cambodia.
The trip will be led by our own President Bryan Humphrey with support from a Cambodian interpreter and guide. Bryan has spent almost three years living and working in Cambodia.
Rotary District 9780 and 22 supporting clubs were successful in gaining a Global Grant to provide clean water in Cambodia.
The project worth $US56, 234 will provide clean water to around 4000 people. This is life changing. It is expected that by the time we travel the project will be completed.
Many members in supporting clubs expressed an interest in travelling to Cambodia to visit the project areas and see personally the impact of their support.
The proposed trip would begin in Phnom Penh. It will include visits to the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, the Killing Fields as well as The Palace, and National Museum. The visit will include a live show featuring Cambodian dance and music.
The group will also visit some Rotary supported projects in and around Phnom Penh.
We will then travel to Veal Veng district in Pursat Province to visit the communities that have received fresh water because of Rotarians in District 9780. We will visit villages, schools and have an opportunity to meet with the communities we have supported. This will be an uplifting experience to share the joy and the life changing stories. We will also have an opportunity to visit classrooms and interact with students in the schools that our Rotary clubs have supported.
We will then travel to Battambang where we will have the opportunity to take in the sites of ancient Angkor Ruins and experience a relaxing time in Cambodia’s second largest city.
The last stop will be Siem Reap, the gate way to the majestic Angkor Wat and the many other temples. A town alive with restaurants and shows. We will include a trip to the holy mountain Phnom Kulen and the surrounding area. We will see a huge reclining Buddha, river bed carvings and early 9th century temples. We will have a picnic lunch at the waterfall.
Proposed Inclusions (these may change as planning continues but are indicative): flight, travel insurance, all meals, all sightseeing, entrance fees, tour and transfer services, English speaking local guide, all accommodation based on 2 sharing room, private air-conditioned vehicles, bicycle hire, private tuk tuk,Drinking water and face towels while sightseeing
Accommodation in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Battambang will be 3-4 star, all with Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Accommodation in Veal Veng is a local guest house which provides comfortable, clean but basic accommodation.
If you are interested in joining this Rotary Cambodian Adventure please express interest by contacting Bryan by email on bryan.humphrey53@gmail.com by October 30th 2017.
