Last Week's Program

Our Meeting of Tuesday 11 July 2017
This was our first meeting at The Hub for the new Rotary year.
Eastern Spice last week was a great start to the new Rotary year with relaxed fellowship.

Allanah explained to those members who were not aware, certain matters to do with her health.
We were moved by Allanah's preparedness to share this information with us and give us an understanding of her situation. We are very much a family in our Club and this was demonstrated by the very supportive response of those present.

Fundraising and Membership - Priorities for 2017-2018
President Bryan emphasised the importance of fundraising and membership and thanked Warren for his excellent work on bringing us an entertaining and informative program.

Call for Cashiers
Warren Norton advises that we need some extra cashiers and on a trial basis we may go to one person on Room.

Our meeting on 29 August
We have a vocational visit on 29 August but catering can't be accommodated at the Newcomb Secondary College so there are  a number of options.

Member Talk
Jenny Acopian spoke of her work as a volunteer Board member with Barwon Child, Youth, Family which is an amalgamation of Glastonbury, Barwon Youth, Time For Youth and Headspace ("BCYF").
BCYF provides a service for early years, family & community services, out of home care, youth services, special intervention services and Headspace.
Special intervention services include drug and alcohol treatment.
BCYF is, as are we all in this Club, so fortunate to have Jenny and her commitment to education, good corporate governance and social justice working with our organisations to make a better Geelong community for all.

Paul Harris Fellow Recognitions
AG Ross Taylor introduced Sue Dunlop who nominated her daughter Margaret to receive an additional PHF recognition.
A statement of Margaret's commitment to the work of Rotary and to the community generally appears in the Bulletin recognising the centenary of the Rotary Foundation in June.
David Sykes introduced Bruce King who spoke of his involvement in sail training over many years at the RGYC and then at Geelong Grammar.
Bruce summed up Rotary as good people doing good things.
Bruce was awarded his Paul Harris Fellowship recognition.

Increase in Meal Costs
Dinner fees has now increased to $22.00 & $27.00 for 2 courses.

Committee Structure and Club Positions for 2017-2018
Members are asked to look at the draft committee and duty chart which has been circulated and give any comments to President Bryan.

Reporting on the Annual Report for 2016-2017

David Sykes tells us more.....

The 2016-17 Annual Report for the Rotary Club of Geelong East is a record of the work done in the community and achievements over the preceding 12 months.

The report is a compilation of the accounts of all the facets of the Club; organisation, members, program, service committees, financial and fellowship. Noteworthy is the summary list of club projects. In fact the Annual Report is the history of the club, but on an annual basis.

Also included is a running history of:
·        Past Presidents and Secretaries
·        PHF Recognitions
·        Royce Abbey Awards
·        RJ Vague Award

To be included in the 2017-18 report will be other historical summaries:
·        Avenues of Service         per Honour Board plus recent record
·        Exchange Students         per Honour Board plus recent record
·        Shine-on
·        Pride of Workmanship
·        Trainee of the Year

Because of the volume of information for recognitions and awards, in most areas we have moved away from honour boards to a record in the Annual Report.

Involve more Rotarians in putting together the Annual Report
There is need to share the experiences of this task, to provide an opportunity for more of the Club members to be involved. Publishing and distributing the report is the culmination of much work by the office holders (authors), PP Jenny as proof reader, PP David in compiling the sections and PP Tony for the printing.
This is a Club challenge that the Board needs to address.

Photographs
The Club Photographers are Satbir and David, with the assistance of others. Photographs are taken of most events, as a club history, but more importantly for fellowship. Many photographs appear in the Annual Report, or our Facebook page. Photographs are an excellent record and PP David has more than 11,000 photos that can be available to any RCGE Rotarian.
We (Satbir and David) are considering being able to make the photos available immediately after each event, to be accessed through the “cloud”. This we have done recently at the first meeting after the change-over, using an iPad and accessing either Facebook or “iCloud” storage.
If the club members and the Board agree, and for discussion, then we can post more photos in a “private” Facebook Account, or another cloud storage service. The challenge will be for this to be accessibility to all.

Some facts about the Annual Report
·        64 pages
·        > 17,000 words
·        13 individual contributors
·        37 individual sections
·        188 photographs or jpg files
·        Cost price to print each copy $10

The Club's Annual Report (thanks to David Sykes, Jenny and Tony and Satbir) is a first class record of our achievements over the last year, an excellent source of Club history and a great public relations and membership development tool.
